Epworth Fire Department Conducts Anhydrous Training

It was a busy and productive evening for the Epworth Fire Department on Monday, April 20, 2026, as more than 20 members gathered for a hands-on anhydrous ammonia training. The session ran from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and was part of the department’s regular monthly fire drill schedule.

Trainings like this are especially important in rural areas, where anhydrous ammonia is commonly used in agriculture but can pose serious risks if something goes wrong. Firefighters spent the evening learning and practicing how to safely respond to potential incidents involving the chemical, building both confidence and teamwork along the way. Scene Lighting and air pack maintenance was also a training topic of the evening.

The training was hosted by EFD Lieutenant Dan Neenan, who helped guide the group through the exercise. A big highlight of the night was the specialized training trailer brought in by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS). The trailer allowed members to work through realistic scenarios and get valuable hands-on experience in a safe, controlled setting.

The department is always working to stay prepared, and nights like this are a great example of that commitment in action. Interested in becoming a member of the Epworth Fire Department? Please reach out to any current EFD member for more information or call 563-876-3321.
