On Feb 29th, 2024 the Epworth Fire Department hosted Simulation in Motion-Iowa or SIM IA. Simulation in Motion – Iowa (SIM-IA) is a mobile education program designed to bring state-of the art clinical education to pre-hospital (EMS) and hospital professionals throughout the state using high-fidelity human patient simulators and trainers. These simulators allow healthcare professionals to perform hands-on education and skill performance for illnesses and traumas they encounter frequently, as well as those that occur less commonly but are high stakes. By using mobile simulation labs (i.e., trucks) we are able to deliver high-quality, evidence-based education to providers who might not have opportunities to attend simulation training due to cost, distance, or coverage.

SIM-IA is currently funded through a generous grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. This funding supports initial start-up costs and no-cost education for rural EMS providers. As the grant funding tapers off, we are working hard to keep the SIM-IA program funded through partnerships and donations to support rural Iowa EMS and critical access hospital providers.

Over 20+ members of the EFD participated in the SIM IA Training. Scenarios included a tractor rollover and a 9-year old allergic reaction. SIM IA plans to visit other neighboring departments through the upcoming weeks.
